Even the finest musicians had to start somewhere. If you are interested in basic guitar lessons but have no idea where to start, there are a few things you should be aware of.  A quick search on the internet will produce thousands of titles that claim to be geared towards the beginner. These come in many different formats, from software to books and DVDs as well as actual classroom instruction.

Self Guided Learning

Self guided learning can have its benefits. Instructional DVDs, books, and software all fall into this category of basic guitar lessons. If you are well motivated and have no trouble sticking with a schedule, then this might be the best route for you. Those who can work independently can enjoy the convenience of working through material at home on your own time. You can even work through lessons in the middle of the night if you want. You will never have to worry about an instructor’s hours of operation.

Most self guided methods are also less expensive than classroom instruction. You can pay a flat fee for the materials, regardless of how many times you reference them. If you sign up for professional classes, you will have to pay more for additional time with your instructor if it is needed.

The downside is, of course, the lack of guidance. You will be learning on your own and more challenging lessons will have to be handled independently. If you need help, you will have to do the research and locate additional resources if necessary. Although basic guitar lessons may not have as many complicated techniques to learn, they can still be a challenge for a new player.

Guided Instruction

Some people learn better when someone else is teaching them. In this situation, guided basic guitar lessons might be your best option. Start searching for schools in your community, and keep in mind distance is a factor when using this method. You will not be able to learn from home (unless you can pay for in-home classes).  Most instructors have a school that you must visit for each session.

The upside to guided instruction when starting with basic guitar lessons is you know you have the assistance of a seasoned guitar player to help you along. Many of the habits you form early on will stay with you throughout your musical career. That makes basic guitar lessons an important part of your learning experience.

Combed Learning Options

There is also a third option available; you can try combining the two learning options. If you have a friend or relative who knows how to play the guitar, ask if they will be your mentor. That way, you have someone to go to with questions you cannot figure out on your own. In the meantime, pick up your basic guitar lessons material in DVD, book, or software format. That way, you have a variety of resources that can help you become a well rounded player. You will still need the motivation, but can enjoy the flexibility and minimal cost that comes with teaching yourself!

Basic guitar lessons come in a variety of formats, so pick the best method for you. Do not be afraid to combine options to come up with the most ideal learning situation for your schedule, budget and abilities. You may discover you have more talent than you first thought!
