Joe supports more accountability and competition into our education system. A robust educational system is vital to West Michigan’s continued success.
Greater accountability in our educational system is necessary in order to accomplish two broad goals. First, our school systems must always be mindful they are spending tax payer money and that those tax dollars must be spent to achieve the greatest value possible per student. Second, our children deserve the very best education possible—without a competitive education our children face an uphill challenge in the global marketplace of the 21st century. Our country’s public education system has lagged for too long behind many developed nation’s school systems. In a global market, our country’s economy will continue to suffer if we do not prepare our children for the jobs of this century.
Accountability should not just be expected of our public school and State of Michigan employees. As parents we must also put forward every effort to prepare our children for learning by encouraging creativity and curiosity in our children’s lives. The Detroit Public School system spends over $11,000 per pupil and yet graduates less than 30% of its students. Higher standards and parental involvement are vital to children’s academic success.
